I often tell our seminar and workshop attendees that training is the key to moving value analysis team(s) to the next level of savings and quality performance.  And believe it or not, quality training that gets to the heart of what value analysis truly is can transform your healthcare organization…in just two days. 

At this moment, that may seem unrealistic, unattainable and just plain wrong.  But you’re thinking of your value team(s) as it is now.  Our training gets back to the basics of value analysis and shows VA teams exactly what they must do to achieve greater savings.  And when your team members feel confident in their knowledge, they will be more energized and excited about ferreting out your organization’s currently hidden savings. 

When we first visit prospective clients to see how their VA teams are working, we often find them going every direction but forward.  Such disorganization results from VA team members not knowing the basics of value analysis.

Most commonly, VA teams go through the motions of what they think they should be doing, but they never realize any serious savings for all the time they’ve invested.  I often tell the story of how I routinely review 12 months of a VA team’s meeting minutes only to find that nothing has changed in those 12 months; the same items that were first on the agenda just keep reappearing month after month. 

Now, when you consider that VA teams have at least 10 members who meet at least once monthly for one hour, it costs your hospital, system or IDN about $5,279.88 annually.  If you have five VA teams (which many large healthcare organizations do) the cost escalates to $26,399.40 annually.

So you can see there is a cost associated with unproductiveness.  That’s why we encourage you to get serious about value analysis by training your VA team members to be more productive, focused, creative and bottom-line oriented.

VA Training Then & Now

We are seeing a very positive emerging trend in healthcare today: Hospitals, systems and IDNs are getting serious about value analysis.  

For years, value analysis was something we told our bosses and colleagues we did to make them think we were on the cutting edge of supply chain management.

We knew, however, in our heart of hearts that our team(s) or committee(s) weren’t generating the savings and quality improvements that they could or should have been.  We knew our team members weren’t attending meetings, that we weren’t getting the management support we needed to be successful and that our department heads and managers too often put up barriers that prevented us from making savings happen.

The good news is:  That was then, and this is now! 

We are now seeing hospitals, systems and IDNs providing formal, advanced training for their senior management and VA teams in the classic tenets of value analysis.  They are organizing their teams to save and seeking out new tools to manage, monitor and control their supply value analysis programs.  They are hiring professional value analysis coordinators, managers and directors to oversee their supply value analysis programs.

Why now and not then?  Today’s economy has sunken a lot of businesses, and the healthcare industry is not immune to the fallout of slow economic times.  No hospital, system or IDN, with their dip in revenues due to the recession, can leave a significant 7 to 15 percent in utilization supply expense savings untouched.  In the past, this 7 to 15 percent seemed nice, but not necessary.  That’s not the case anymore; now, it’s critical to many healthcare organizations even surviving.   This is where value analysis comes to the rescue!

Value analysis, if practiced correctly, consistently and scientifically, is the vital savings engine that all healthcare organizations, both large and small, need to make Savings Beyond Price™ quickly happen.
