VA
Planning is the Shortcut
Greetings,
One of
the biggest challenges we find while coaching value analysis teams
is that EVERYONE is looking for shortcuts on their VA projects.
While we too would love to find shortcuts with VA, the hard fact is
that after 23 years of establishing, training, facilitating and
coaching VA teams the only shortcut we have found is that extensive
PLANNING will make your VA projects go quicker, become easier and be
more productive in the long run.
Here’s
what I mean!
It’s not unusual for us to observe a VA Project manager taking a
shortcut by calling in their hospital’s vendors to do their VA
project work on custom packs, oxisensors, IV sets, endomechanicals,
etc., for them while never even shadowing their customers to see how
these products are employed in their hospital.
By
taking this shortcut (vendors doing their VA work) VA project
managers are missing the whole point of what VA is all about: You
must personally understand, investigate, analyze, speculate, plan
and execute your own VA studies if you want UNBIASED results. No
vendor can or will give you impartial or unprejudiced results on
your VA studies.
The
first hour is the best hour.
The only way we know of to speed up your VA studies is to spend the
first hour of your VA study PLANNING how you are going to
efficiently and effectively ascertain if the product, service or
technology you are investigating is a good functional fit for your
healthcare organizations. This is much better than calling in
vendors, looking for a better price or believing what your
department heads and managers are telling you truth about the
commodity you are studying.
If you
don’t follow this prescription (planning first, investigating
second), you will find, as we have, that you will be SHORTCHANGING
yourself and your healthcare organization because you will be
leaving hundreds of thousands of dollars on the table – untouched.
Value
analysis was never designed to be a sprint to find savings. It is
more like a marathon which is a lengthy and difficult undertaking
but is exhilarating when you finally get over the finish line.
Don’t take shortcuts that will diminish the quality of your VA
studies just so you can say you completed your study on time.
VA isn’t about speed, it is all about excellence!
