Too Much
Information – Think about a Dashboard
Greetings,
It’s
hard to believe that we have so much information to manage these
days. When I was a material manager my biggest concern was keeping
track of my inventory turn numbers, but now I can think of at least
229 categories of supply chain performance metrics that we must keep
our eye on for our clients. To our dismay, these mission critical
statistics are growing every day, week, month and year that we have
been in business.
For
example, we are now tracking and trending our clients drug eluding
vs. bare metal stent utilization, which we added to our
dashboard dictionary about eight
months ago. We now are also working with a few of our clients on a
beta test to study their drug utilization, since we have uncovered
huge utilization misalignments in this expense category. As you can
see, measuring and managing your supply chain performance data is a
never-ending, but necessary chore if you want keep ahead of our ever
changing healthcare environment.
I used
to keep this vital information on spreadsheets, where I would always
delete numbers by mistake. After a few quarters or years I became
completely confused over what number should go into which columns
because I couldn’t see my headers any longer.
Worst of
all, I was frustrated since I couldn’t dig and drill down
immediately to search for the answers on why I was having
significant changes in my client’s metrics. It then took me weeks
to compile this information off line and on line so that I could
begin to analyze the changes in my client’s data.
All of
this grief stopped straight away when we developed a
dashboard. This captured all of our
client’s supply chain data, then sliced and diced and analyzed it.
It then generated graphical, statistical and trending reports that
could easily be understood and that were actionable for our clients.
So if
you are having too much information to manage as we did, then think
DASHBOARD to stop the madness of having the right data, at the right
time, in the right format so that you can understand and then act on
any and all changes in your supply chain operations.
