What Healthcare Reform Means to Supply Chain Professions
Greetings,
I was just talking to a supply chain manager of a large healthcare system who asked me what I thought of the new healthcare reform bill that was signed into law last Tuesday. I told him to fasten his safety belt!
I made this quip because, in my opinion, this bill will change the face of healthcare as we know it today. I feel this way since it has been my experience that “Whatever the government gives to healthcare organizations, it always takes away”. Get my point!
Remember when your hospital was making money when the government introduced DRG payments in 1983. Is your hospital making money now on these same DRGs? Very little, if any, would be my guess!
So even if you get more paying patients under this new bill, how long do you think it will take before your reimbursement will be cut to the bone? And you won’t be able to shift your cost to your insurance providers since they aren’t going to have any money either to give you. This is because your insurance providers are being mandated by this new law to cut their rates, shave their administrative costs and reduce how much money they are holding in reserves. Ouch…
I can assure you that these predictions aren’t based on my simple musings, but are supported by my observing the healthcare marketplace for 37 years. As you know, history always repeats itself!
What can you do about this eventuality? You need to prepare now (high-risk insurance pools are mandated by this law to be in place within 90-days), not tomorrow, for this dip in your hospital’s revenues by ratcheting down all of your supply chain expenses to an absolute minimum.
Under this bleak scenario only low cost/high-quality healthcare organizations will survive in this “new healthcare environment” I just talked about. However, if you plan ahead, add new and better strategies, tactics and techniques to your savings arsenal and double-down on your savings yields you can be one of the few healthcare organizations to survive and thrive in this “new economy”. It’s just that simple!
