A much better and faster way is to look for big savings ideas “outside” of your healthcare organization by taking your value teams on “IDEA TRIPS”. Or, you could call them hunting trips to successful companies “outside” of our industries to look for new and better savings ways to do things.

A healthcare manufacturer’s value team employed this same concept recently when they went on an “IDEA TRIP” to hardware stores in search of better ideas for their staple guns. At these stores the team members bought staple guns and staples from numerous manufacturers. After reverse engineering the guns they bought this value team found new ways to manufacturer better and less expensive staple guns. They would never have found these new ideas from “inside” their organization.

Here’s how this “IDEA TRIP” notion can work for your value teams. Say your value team is investigating your orthopedic softgoods products. Wouldn’t it be fun (and profitable) to schedule an “IDEA TRIP” with you local professional baseball or football team’s trainer to understand how he/she makes purchasing decisions on their orthopedic softgoods? Or, your value team could visit a nursing home near your facility to see what products they buy to manage their incontinence patients. Or, visit a hotel close to your facility to see how they manage their linen utilization and theft control.

I’m sure you get the idea by now! “IDEA TRIPS” are a fun way for your value team to think more outside of the box with their value studies. Better savings ideas to lower your supply chain expenses are everywhere, but you need to look “outside” your healthcare organization to find them.
