Savings Beyond Price -Weekly E-Zine- March 15, 2006

Greetings!

I’m frequently astounded and disappointed at the number of supply chain professionals who have no targets, no benchmarks and no measurements to shoot for to improve their supply chain operations. They would rather blunder around like a “Blind Archer” unable to see savings opportunities that are right in front of them.

These same individuals wouldn’t play golf on a golf course without any holes in it, or plan a trip without a map to show them how to get to their destination and how much time it will take to get there. So why don’t these individuals take the time to measure daily, weekly, monthly and yearly the progress they are making towards their goals (if they even have goals)

I find that there are three reasons why this is happening: (i) they aren’t motivated to measure, (ii) they don’t know how to measure or, (iii) they don’t know what to measure.

I can’t help those individuals who aren’t motivated to measure, since they are the “Blind Archers” I talked about who will never find their way.  But if you are in the category of don’t know how or not knowing what to measure you should seriously consider our “no cost – no obligation” www.strategicvalueanalysis.com/scorecard.htm Supply Savings Scorecard to point the way for you to huge savings opportunities if you don’t want to be a “Blind Archer” too.

A Whole New Way To Look At Your Supply Savings?

“Having A Successful Supply Value Analysis Program Is Like Having Additional Revenue Streams, But The Cash Flows Right To Your Bottom Line

Did you know for your hospital to generate $1.00 in new revenues it requires $32.00 to $49.00 in expenses to produce this new revenue? On the other hand, every dollar you generate in new supply savings goes (non stop) to your hospital’s bottom line?  This is a whole new way to look at your supply savings; as a new revenue stream for your hospital, system or IDN!

It’s also a proven fact that executives (in any industry) that work on the profit side of their business make the most money! Most of the sales reps you meet and greet every day making $100,000 or, $200,000, or even $300,000 annually. Even CEOs and CFOs, at a small rural hospitals, make a couple of hundred thousands dollars a year who are on the profit side of the business. Is this the kind of salary and bonuses you are taking home every year too?  I don’t think so…

You Need To Be On The Profit Side Of The Business

If you want to make BIG BUCKS in this industry you too need to be on the profit side of the business!  This means you need to stop talking about savings and start talking about PROFITABILITY!  Your executive management team needs to think of your supply function as a profit center, not as a cost center at your hospital, system or IDN.

One way this can be accomplished is by documenting your savings with monthly, quarterly and annual savings reports that are send to you boss, that show the bottom line effect of your savings (as a percentage) on your hospital, system or IDN’s bottom line.  You arrive at this calculation by dividing your savings (monthly, quarterly or annually) into your hospital, system or IDN’s net profits for the same period.

This exercise will start to raise your boss’ consciousness to the fact that your supply chain department is a profit center for your hospital, system or IDN.  Thereby, beginning the educational process of justifying a bigger salary and bonuses for you. This is because your boss will now see your supply function as a profit center for your hospital, system or IDN, not a cost center.

Value Analysis Is Your Biggest Revenue Stream

Now that you get the idea of why you need to be seen as a profit center by your management, and not a cost center, let’s talk about where to find these new revenue streams for your hospital, system or IDN.

“Having A Successful Supply Value Analysis Program Is Like Having Additional Revenue Streams, But The Cash Flows Right To Your Bottom Line.”

Our studies show, over and over again, that 79% of any new supply savings available to your hospital, system or IDN are in your utilization misalignment and value mismatches.  These savings can only be found by applying advanced strategies, tactics and techniques of value analysis.

Unfortunately, unless you have had advanced value analysis training and are employing the latest technologies to search out these hidden savings, you aren’t going to capitalize on these hard to find and hard to implement value analysis savings happen.  It’s your choice or not, if you want to be on the profit side of our business or not!
