The
Power Of Focus Will Propel Your Value Teams To The Next
Level Of Savings Performance

by
Robert T. Yokl, President

“A Clear And Sharp Focus or
Concentration On The Things That Matter Will Bring You Closer To
Your Target – Big Savings”
It’s been my experience that if healthcare
organization’s concentrate on the five key elements of their
value analysis program they can propel their value teams to
the next level of savings performance without undue stress or
strain. Here are those five areas to focus on:
- Focus
on Consistency or
the
ability of
your value teams to maintain high standards with
minimal variation from the norm that you have established.
Simply stated, this means that your value studies need to be of
the highest quality and follow a prescribed methodology that
isn’t deviated from, from one value study to the next.
- Focus
on Discipline directed at the performance of your
value team’s members. Are members missing meetings or coming
late to meetings? Are members completing their value studies on
time or just going through the motions? Discipline means
ensuring that your team members obey the rules (if you
don’t have any rules, you better start making them) and when
they don’t, teaching them to do so and punishing them if they do
not comply.
- Focus
on Outcomes that concentrate your value team efforts on
measurable quantitative and qualitative results -- the
bigger the better. Without measurable results you won’t
know when you have reached your targeted savings or how to make
mid-course corrections to meet your stated goals and objectives.
- Focus
on Process or a series of steps that your team members
are to follow consistently when they are evaluating/selecting
the “best value” product, service or technology for your
healthcare organization. Make sure that the steps are
repeatable and auditable as opposed to everyone doing
their “own thing”.
- Focus
on Maintenance of your value team’s activities and
work to keep it in good
working order, such as, making sure that the room you meet in has good light
and air flow, that your minutes and agendas are sent to your
members before your meetings to insure good communications. That
all team members have the tools and training that are required
to perform their value studies without artificial barriers
preventing them from performing their jobs on-time -- every
time.
If you religiously focus on these five areas of value
team performance you will make giant leaps forward in your team’s
performance overnight. I guarantee it!
