Experiment, Learn, and Repeat!
We all talk about innovation, but most of us keep doing the same things we have been doing for years, even decades, without questioning what we have been doing. We never ask ourselves or our team members if there is a faster, better and easier way of doing what we have always been doing.
We rarely, if ever venture outside our own world to learn what’s new and exciting in supply chain management. We are all about maintaining, not advancing our supply chain operations to the next level of performance.
This was the situation with a regional alliance that for 13 years did the same things in the same way and achieved the same meager results. They then retained my firm to develop a comprehensive five-year material management strategic operational plan that challenged their membership’s thinking in nine supply chain categories to experiment, learn and then repeat their successes in other areas of their operations.
I’m happy to report that after 18 months of implementation of their strategic operational plan, that this alliance has exceeded all of their financial targets. This is because they were asking better questions, and consequently they got better answers to their challenges and then they aggressively acted upon them!
You too can move from good to great if you follow the first rule of innovation: experiment, learn, and then repeat your successes. This simple rule will enable you to guard against complacency in your supply chain operations by always challenging you and your team to be better than good in everything you do.
