Tough Questions to Ask In The Name of Successful Value Analysis

These questions are set up as a hard look at your systems, methods and practices that you employ for supply savings and value analysis.

  1. Does your organization have an effective value analysis program? In your eyes?  In senior managements point of view?

  2. Is Your Value Analysis Program The Best It Can Be?  Or is it just good enough?

  3. Do You save big dollars($$$) or at least your value team results account for 3% to 5% savings of total supply spend each year?

  4. Are you really performing value analysis or are you following the old product evaluation/standardization model?  (Are you still passing products around the meeting room and/or endlessly trialing products to see if clinicians will accept them?)

  5. Do you complete 100% of all of your projects?  If not why not?

  6. Have all team members been trained in the latest Value Analysis strategies?  (The Father of Value Analysis, Larry Miles, recommended a minimum of 40-80 hours of value analysis/engineering training for all value practitioners)

  7. Does material management shoulder the burden (does all the leg work) for the entire team or committee?  Is that really a team approach?

  8. Do you employ a true step by step system which starts with project origination, study procedures/actions, on out to implementation and follow-up.  Or, do you only employ policies and forms that can be interpreted any which way but loose (Factoid:  This is where organizations lose focus.  They mistake a "Process" for meaning they have policy and forms but in reality they leave the door open for loose interpretation which allows project managers to perform a study any which way they see fit.)

  9. Do you have all study data in a standardized format and loaded for quick retrieval from a database?

  10. Do you employ a savings tracking system?  If so, is it in a database format and can be viewed by senior management as a dashboard?

Ok Now What?  You may be able to punch a few holes in your value analysis program or in some cases be able to drive a truck through the gaps but there still has to be logical next steps for any Supply Chain Leader.
